Sugar Flower Shop to be featured in the Daily News and Crain's New York Business!

Last week, I spent two mornings with photographers here at the Shop. It was such an exciting process to go through - working while being photographed, posing while looking natural, having all sorts of equipment around to light my work and my face.

From what I've been told, the Daily News article should be in the paper tomorrow (Friday). Look in the Home section. The Crain's New York Business article is set to come out in the middle or end of this month. Keep your eyes glued to the newsstands!

Rubber Ducky, You're the One!

Sugar Flower Shop created a rare sculpted cake for an adorable three-year-old a couple of weeks ago and had so much fun doing so! Here was the response we received from our client's dad:

"On October 3, 2009 my wife Patti and I reached out to Sugar Flower Shop to create a birthday cake, second to none. Our daughter Leah, insisted on a “duck” themed birthday party, and wanted a duck cake. Patti and I contemplated making a simple cake ourselves, but quickly realized that we were going to be out of our element. Then we found online the Sugar Flower Shop. The owner, Amy DeGiulio, returned our phone call immediately, and the process began. We met with Amy the next day to discuss the cake. After the meeting, we were assured that we were in the right place. Besides our wedding, my wife and I never considered buying a professionally made cake for an event, let alone for a 3 year old's birthday party. We always thought that is would be too expensive, and unnecessary. We talked about pricing, expressed our concerns, and Amy assured us that she would be able to make a cake within our budget that would be utterly amazing. Amy began with a simple sketch outlining her vision. A simple round base, with a 3 dimensional duck on top. She then showed us a few photos of “accents” that she had done on some other cakes where she created bubbles out of sugar. The sketch along with the photos made it really easy to visualize exactly what we would be getting. From concept to reality, the experience was second to none. When the cake was delivered, Patti and I were both taken back by it’s beauty. The craftsmanship on this cake was impeccable. Friends we bump into are still talking about the cake. We have been sold with Sugar Flower Shop. In the future, this will be the only place that we get our cakes from. Better Crocker, watch out!"

Spa-Themed 50th Birthday Party Cake

We just received an e-mail from a client about one of our recent favorite cakes. It was a small cake for an intimate pampering party, but lots of work went into custom sculpting a figurine relaxing at the spa. She was designed to look like the birthday girl and was wrapped in a towel, had an avocado mask and sugar bubbles dangled from her feet and trailed down the side of the cake.

Because the accolades we received for this cake were so detailed, we wanted to share it:

"The cake was so beautiful and delicious! The ladies had a good laugh and my Mom couldn't get over the fact that [the sugar sculpture] was made to look like her...The size was perfect, everyone was able to have a good serving with some left over. One comment that was made by one of the women was that she is not a fan of icing, but yours was so subtle it didn't compete with the cake, but enhanced the taste of the chocolate filling...Quite honestly, I personally loved the bubbles trickling down the side and really liked how you took my suggestions and pictures and didn't replicate them, but used them to make it unique, customized and special so that it made it even a surprise for me when I opened the box (I was expecting a replica of the picture I sent and was so excited to see how you pulled all the elements together with a twist). All in all, it was delicious and you accomplished my main goals: keep the theme, have it taste "yummy," get the ladies to "ooh and aah" and possibly have a laugh at the resemblance between the figurine topper and my mom which we all found to be adorable!!!

Thank you, thank you for being so helpful and welcoming of my ideas, making the whole process rather "painless" and for really helping us top off the evening with such a special element. It really helped to bring the entire theme together."
